- Charitable Search Engines
You’ve made the decision to switch to an alternative search engine – one that supports environmental issues through donations – but which one do you opt for?
We explore the battle of OceanHero vs Ecosia to see who comes out on top, taking into account the different factors that you’ll want to consider.
Ecosia is the search engine that plants trees, donating 80% of its profits to tree-planting projects.
OceanHero is the search engine that cleans the oceans of plastic, donating around 50% of its profits to ocean-cleaning projects.
Both OceanHero and Ecosia have opted for fairly simple concepts when it comes to their central mission. Ecosia is probably the most well-known charitable search engine, and they gained popularity by being ‘the search engine that plants trees’, aiming to combat deforestation and help with climate-related issues.
OceanHero was launched more recently, in 2019, and also has one main goal: to recover plastic that is bound for the ocean. They partner with Plastic Bank and donate money in order to support the collection of plastic bottles. The user can recover one ocean-bound plastic bottle for every 5 searches.
While OceanHero donates around 50% of the profits they make from advertising to their partner charities, allowing them to recover one plastic bottle for every five searches, Ecosia donates 80% of their profits to partner charities in order to plant trees.
When it comes to the numbers, Ecosia comes out on top. While OceanHero donates around 50% of the profits they make from advertising to their partner charities, allowing them to recover one plastic bottle for every five searches, Ecosia donates 80% of profits to partner charities in order to plant trees. Since they began in 2009, Ecosia have planted over 120 million trees.
However, it’s worth mentioning that Ecosia does not donate the largest amount of their profit across all charitable search engines. French charity search engine Youcare donates an equal 80%, while our newly launched SearchScene search engine donates an impressive 95% of our profits to your chosen charities!
While the central reason for switching to an alternative or charity search engine is to help the planet with your daily search habits, you also still want a high-quality search experience. Google is popular for a reason – and it’s because it has evolved to provide a wealth of information to users on first click.
Therefore, when someone decides to make the switch from Google, they don’t want to feel like they have made too much of a compromise. After all, we rely on search engines a great deal in modern society to provide us with information in an instant.
The search experiences of OceanHero and Ecosia are actually fairly similar on the whole. Both search engines have news and video snippets integrated within the main results, which helps to break up the page, and both have knowledge panels on the right-hand side, with slightly more detail in the OceanHero one. OceanHero also has an additional featured snippet at the top of the page, which is similar to how Google operates.
As you can see, these are fairly similar results and do a reasonable job at providing information to the user. However, SearchScene is superior to both Ecosia and OceanHero when it comes to search experience. SearchScene has a far more detailed knowledge panel which includes an extended section of information drawn from Wikipedia, social media links and relevant movies and TV shows.
SearchScene is superior to both OceanHero and Ecosia when it comes to the amount of profits donated and the user’s search experience.
OceanHero vs Ecosia: Which Should You Choose?
One important thing to note is that Ecosia and OceanHero aren’t the only charitable search engines to choose from. Both do admirable work, but there are options out there that may be better suited to you.
SearchScene, for example, is superior to both OceanHero and Ecosia when it comes to the amount of profits donated and search the user’s experience. It also offers more flexibility when it comes to your charitable giving: you can donate to a variety of climate-related global charities, each of which support many different causes. You can also select which charities you’d like to support from the list by using the heart-shaped charity icon in the top right corner.
Whatever you decide when it comes to choosing an alternative search engine, it’s a great thing to do for the planet and enables you to do good deeds during your usual daily life!
